Conditional Solidarity - Attitudes Towards Support for Others During the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to study how humans allocate scarce resources in times of hardship. We public preferences regarding who should get access government aid for the self-employed, bed intensive care unit, and permission cross border using original conjoint survey experiments administered an incentivised online panel Switzerland during first second waves 2020. find that across three areas, even extraordinary circumstances such as pandemic, evaluations deservingness support are still based on underlying logic conditional solidarity identity: all experiments, contributing community, be it through past actions contributions or current efforts, plays crucial role determining individual’s deservingness, does their nationality (and legal status) with nationals being perceived more deserving than non-nationals.
